dirty cartoons

Am I the only one who finds the unintentional inappropriateness of children's cartoons to be absolutely hilarious? I mean come on, ADULTS are writing this stuff. They have to know that some of the dialog and animations are at times, not really aimed at their target market. They can't be that oblivious. Or can they?

Take this mornings episode of Clifford the Big Red Dog. I have no idea what the story line was but I glanced up from the kitchen sink to see two dogs running away from some nasty crows. The dogs got trapped under a wheelbarrow with the crows sitting on top of them. Still with me? Okay, this is where the perceived inappropriateness comes in.

Next thing I see is a gust of wind blowing the crows off the wheelbarrow. It was Clifford and he was wagging his tail to create the breeze to get rid of the crows. But in my mind? Clifford farted and he was wagging the stink at the crows. It works right? Dog farts are nasty and one from a giant dog would do the trick of clearing the room.

Maybe it's just me. Maybe I'm immature. Perhaps I'm reading into these cartoons a bit too much.

It still makes me laugh…

grass skirts

I can't remember the last time I played a video game. Probably before Gideon was born. No, not probably—definitely before Gideon was born. I think it was Sims 2: Pets. I love me some Sims. But Sims 2: Pets? It sucked. I was bored within minutes. Not a good product for the Sims franchise.

On Saturday, while picking up Ratatouille, I rented Sims 2: Castaway. It's Sims the way Sims were meant to be. Super Fun! The premise is that you and your shipmates (I created 5 total at the start) get shipwrecked and end up on a deserted island. There are monkeys that you can interact with and tons of resources to harvest—but that's about it. Your hair grows on the island & you have to figure out how to cut it (if you want). Use the sewing kit, btw. Your clothes wear out and you have to craft new ones out of banana leaves and vines. Tools must be created from local resources. All your food? From local resources. Showers? In the ocean. Bathroom? Well, they give you an endless supply of toilet paper for that one. And those shipmates? They have to be found by you while you are out exploring the island(s).

It's awesome. And terribly addicting. Just like any GOOD Sims game is. Which is hard to handle when you have a baby. There was more than one occasion this weekend when I felt like I was skirting my parental duties. I'm sure I wasn't—it's not like Gideon was playing in the oven or anything. JQ had parenting duties under control & I tried to only play when he was napping. Do you know what you can get done when your child only naps for 40 minutes? Not much. It's due back Thursday and I have to work tomorrow night and all day Thursday. I don't think I'll get much more play time in. Maybe I'll rent it again during Christmas break.

screwed

On Monday, November 5th I watched Gideon go from laying on his stomach to sitting on his butt. Unassisted. In one fluid movement. Later on that day while we were playing on the floor he pulled himself from that same stomach position to a standing position with the aid of the couch. He thought that was quite hilarious. After his nap I watched him stand up from a sitting position in his crib. I caught that last one on tape.
This is no fluke. He's been doing it repeatedly since Monday. We are screwed.

Sunday morning

I think Daylight Savings Time is just a cruel joke for parents with young children. An extra hour of sleep? My ass. Tell that to my 7 month old. "No, no honey—you can't get up yet. I don't care what your internal clock tells you. The clock on Mommy's nightstand says it's actually an hour earlier. Go back to sleep. We get an extra hour today." I can't wait to see how it affects the rest of our day.

If you participate in DST and got your extra hour—good for you. Bastards.

I think the hardest part about NaBloPoMo for me will be the weekends. I wonder if that is true for the majority of participants. I don't blog much on the weekends. There aren't a lot of bloggers that I read that post much on the weekends. I don't read too many blogs on the weekends—unless it's early in the morning. We're busy being a family and doing housework and what not on Saturdays and Sundays. It's ironic since I don't have a job that is conducive to the habits of most bloggers. It's a wonder I ever find time to blog.

I'm impressed with JQ's progress on his participation in NaNoWriMo. He has already written over 5000 words of his novel since Thursday. Add to that the fact that he: worked Thursday, didn't write on Friday, went shopping with us Saturday, watched two movies this weekend, has been his regular Dad self (which is really involved for JQ—he's an awesome Dad), and he hasn't written yet today (as of 9 a.m). Yeah...total run-on sentence, but you catch my drift.

He's up now so I'm out of here.

sometimes the love, it overwhelms

Last week I was holding Gideon when I suddenly found myself brought to tears. Tears over how much I LOVE this child. I was completely overwhelmed with the intense amount of love I felt. So tiny in my arms. So close to my heart. It makes me teary eyed just thinking about it. I wanted to remember that moment forever and grabbed the camera. We walked over to the window in the office and I held out my arm and snapped a few shots. This one took my breath away. Not exactly what I'd call a great shot of me, but I love seeing the baby from the back. The sweet innocence he projects. The way his arms are holding on to me.

It's my Best Shot Monday pick this week.

first fourth (best shot monday)

I've been somewhat randomly participating in Tracey's My Best Shot Monday group. As Tracey put it in a recent post of hers,
BSM is mostly about sharing ANY photo from the week (or from the more distant past if you so choose) that you want to share. No rules. No themes. Just sharing.

It's just about Mondays and having something fun to look forward to. That's my intention.OK then.
I like that idea, because, while I do take pictures of the flowers in our gardens and other things, I find that the majority of the images I shoot these days involve Gideon. My little family of 3. My new life. And I love them all.

So, with that, here's my best shot for this week. My boys on the fourth. I shot 339 pictures last week, so I had a lot to choose from. I really like this one. Not only is it Gideon's first Fourth of July, but it captures a really sweet moment with my guys. To me, it just oozes with love and the pride that Josh has for Gideon and being a father.

Working from home today. Any questions?

bumping the bumper

In a fit of paranoia I just removed the bumper pad from Gideon's crib. At 11:30 pm. While he is sleeping. After Googling "are bumper pads safe". Less than an hour after I found him on his stomach again right up against the edge of the pad.

This rolling over in bed trick has me totally freaked out.

that's around 770 so far

Remember when Josh had the diaper/poker party and all the participants had to bring a pack of diapers with them? I'm very happy to say that we have yet to buy diapers because of this. Three months later. That rocks.
We finished up with the newborn size at just the right time and have gone through the last of the size ones that I wasn't crazy about (Kroger & Rite Aid). We are on the last box of Pampers 1-2 (my favorite diapers so far). It's a huge 216 pack box and a week or two ago I was thinking about how once we finished that we had 2 packs of size 2's left and then we would have to start buying our own.
I was super excited when I moved a blanket in the closet later that week and found several more packs of diapers. Josh had put them all away back in February and put all the size 2's up on a shelf. I couldn't see the other packs and had just assumed for a long time that once we used up everything that was stored on the floor we would have just those 2 packs left. Nope, we've got another 200+ diapers. That's almost another month's worth.
You're not going to put one of those on my head too, are you?
