Then I realized something horrible last week—I have to work that night. It's finals week and my class doesn't start until 5:30 pm. So, while there may be a chance that I'll get home in time for the last half hour, all I'll probably see are the stragglers and the teens with crappy outfits. This disappointed Josh as much as it did me and he's half tempted to forgo the whole passing out candy thing altogether. We haven't purchased any bags o' sweets yet and if we do I have no idea what we'll get. Do we get something we'd like in case there is a bunch left (like peanut M&M's or Twix or SweetTarts—which would just be for me) or just buy a few bags of what's on sale?What's your favorite Halloween treat and what do you buy for the trick-or-treaters?

I don't have any one favorite item. I like the variety of the stuff my kids bring home.
Last year we had 360 trick or traters at our house.
I have yet to buy candy for trick or treaters since I have lived on my own. We are always busy on that day, so I don't buy it. But if I were to buy candy, I would buy Charleston Chew, Twix and Babe Ruth. I am not sure if kids even eat those, but this "kid" sure does!
What a yummy Post. I love and pass out Twix, Twizzlers, and the treat-size packets of M&M's peanut and plain. We got some King Size Hershey Bars for the kids across the street. I also love carving a pumpkin with those little saws. Sorry you'll miss it. :(
I like any candy that is widely recognized. What sucks is when you get one or two bags of M&M's and a whole crap ton of those plain unnammed candies in the orange and black wrappers. They chew like rubber and taste like poop.
So I'll be nice to my trick-or-treaters and give them the good stuff like Nerds, Twix bars, and Snickers. I might even throw in 8 oz. cans of soda.
We give out the good stuff - Mini Snickers, M&M's, Twix, Milk-Way, Babe Ruth, Almond Joy, I buy a few bags of each - put it in a paper box - and sit in a chair outside the garage. We will be swamped for two hours.... This year I'm thinking of skipping the whole handing out candy - and going w/the hubby and kids to beg...
The town where we used to lived then was big into organized trick or treating in church parking lots, etc., so we never had more than one or two kids stop per year, even though we were on a busy street.
This year, we'll be busy trick or treating with Sparky, so we won't be giving anything out ourselves.
But if you really want to know, my favorite it SweetTarts.
I go to Sam's club and get the giant sized bag of Twix, M&M, Milky Way, Snickers, and 3 Musketeers (all the little ones). We make special bags for our neighbor's kids with a nice little bag and full size candy. I LOVE Milky Way Midnight. Pretty much any dark chocolate. In fact the Lindt 85% Cocoa is awesome and bitter.
Mad Ethel - Those black and orange rubber turds are actually peanut butter taffy. Everyone just used to throw those away when I was a kid, or have fights with them.

When I was little my dad took me trick or treating and he would hide while I knocked on the door. We got to one house and this smartass guy opened the door and said "trick". I was like 5 so I just stood there and all of a sudden my dad jumped out and went "RRRAAAAAAAAHHH!!!". Scared the shit out of the guy. I love my dad.
Your post made me realize Kevin is working that night, too, so if I want to do the trick-or-treat thing I'll be on my own.
I have no idea what I'd buy- I haven't done it before. I like to be fun and buy the "good stuff", and I know what I didn't enjoy as a kid. I'm liking the candy alternatives out there too- last week I saw packages of the dimestore-type plastic animals, and the week before that mini cans of play-doh were being touted. Cute!

I buy what I like (M&M's, Reese's, tootsie rolls), but this year I think I will go trick or treat at Mr. Fab's house.
Two years ago we passed out mini bags of popcorn and ran out. The kids loved it!
I enjoyed Reese's Pieces and hated Dum Dums. What kid wants lollipops?
In my old neighborhood we gave out "fun" size candy bars to the kids and bottles of beer to the adults that we knew. There would be lots of screaming kids and a few really mellow adults walking around.
There are not many young kids in our new neighborhood so we have been taking the girls to their cousin's house the last few years.
Jake - thanks for the info. It answered a question that has bothered me for eons. I'll just refer to them as "Ass Candy" from now on.
Jen - Hey, if it pays well, then where do I sign up? I'm from the south. I know the lingo. I can do it!
We call the peanut butter taffy "bush candy" because you need to throw it in the bushes as soon as no one's looking.
