cherries & sunburns

We never did make it to the farmer's market yesterday. By the time Josh got back it was too late. Instead, I spent part of the morning picking cherries off the tree in our backyard. It is full of fruit right now and even after leisurely picking for almost an hour, there is still a bunch of fruit on the tree. My plans for what I have harvested so far are to attempt the following:
  1. brandied cherries
  2. dried cherries
  3. cherry tart
I've never made any of the above, but I'm adventurous, so why not give it a whirl. Here's a quick picture I shot while picking. Aren't they beauties?

Around one o'clock yesterday we started resetting the back patio. That was sucky. It was 90°+ out and of course the hottest part of the day. Resetting involved picking up and moving 30 2x2 ft. stones that weighed like 60 pounds each. Then, leveling off the ground with sand and laying them all back down. It took the 2 of us almost 3.5 hours to finish. The heat coupled with the fact that both of us had only eaten a spoonful of peanut butter, some coffee, and water all day made us really hungry (and tired). We both got too much sun, but I feel pretty good this morning and not nearly as sore as I thought I'd be.

We picked up my brother in the evening and went and chowed down at a local eatery. With full bellies we came back to our place and played some games. We played snatch again—which I won again—and 2 hands of UNO (which Josh killed us in). Then Alex and I watched Caddyshack. That movie is such a classic. I laugh everytime I see it. The temperature never really dropped below the low 70s and sleeping was a challenge last night—which leads me to wonder, What the hell am I doing up so early today?

Habit.
Coffee.
Blogs.
All of the above.

Josh is already off playing golf this morning and my brother is sleeping away in the cool, dark basement. The birds are chirping. My coffee is hot. And a nice breeze is blowing through the house. It's going to be another great day. I love this time of year.

Wow, resetting the patio sounds sucky enough, but with it in the 90's it's even worse! I ordered a truckload of rock last year to put around my house and it was in the mid 90's with high humidity that day. That job sucked too!

It was 90 by us too. It made me glad that I mowed the other day.

Hey, we are neighbors. I am in Indiana.

I used to LOVE picking cherries!!! Although when me and my sisters had finished there were never that many left.

Ah well, such is life!!

It hasn't been 90 here :( It's fairly warm but mostly humid and the sky is white and sucky!

If you would have called me earlier,I would have helped with the patio stones...

Uno is now banned in our house as it always brings out the worst in us ( changing allegiencies and downright cheating). Cherry Brandy is cool.

Sounds like a fun evening with all the games!

I stopped by to say thanks for playing in the Blog Olympics Training Camp!

Now that's a great weekend. Good food, an early morning with hot coffee and solitude, some good hard work, (exercise) and snatch.

Of course any weekend with snatch is good. Glad you had a fun!

So did you have to fight off the birds to get your cherries? We have one in our backyard and the robins are going to town on the tree. It's madness I tell you, madness.

This post reminds me of a cherry tree we had in our backyard when I was growing up. Up until I was about 13, we would pick buckets of Bing Cherries off the tree. To this day, there is a dark stain on the light blue shag carpet in my old bedroom marking the spot where I threw up after eating one too many cherries. We would pick them every fourth of July. Suddenly, one year all the crows ate the cherries before we could pick them. It was as if one crow told all his friends about the tree. We never had anymore cherries after that; now I have to spend $4.99 a pound for them at the grocery store.

When I lived in the trailer (shutup!) there was a cherry tree in the yard. I spent quite a while picking them one day with the intentions of making a delicious sour cherry tart a la Martha Stewart. But since I have never picked or otherwise delt with them before I forgot you had to pit them. And when I finally did remember that little fact I then managed to destroy all the cherries trying to claw the pits out. So I gave up and have thus since never tried to cook with cherries. I did remember to take an awesome pic like you did though before the carnage.

yummy! i'm so jealous of your fruit-bearing trees. one of the downfalls to living in a big city, i guess.

glad you weren't naked when you took that picture - it would have been funny to see that image in the reflection of the colander. heehee

beebers—I was hoping noone would noticed that funhouse-esque reflection in the colander. Thanks for pointing it out.

madE—Hey everybody Mad Ethel lived in a TRALIOR! Let's all laugh at her. hahaha...trailor trash. Seriously though, you forgot to pit them? I'm hoping to find a pitter when I go to the store today.

VofF—I don't want them to just go to the birds so I started picking. This is our first spring here so we shall see how this endeavor goes.

Egan—With my mad bird detterent skills I was able to ward them off. Watching me caw through the yard is awesome. I'll send a video.

Sarah—nice to see your face around here

dave—a lovely weekend indeed

barbara—BOTC has been fun!

alistar!—did you know you can get penalties in UNO for allegiances?

mike—yum indeed

alex—we didn't want to put you out by making you work. Hope you had fun with us.

mr. fab—well aren't you just a fancy man?

melissa—if they were sweet I probably would have eaten a whole lot more right off the tree.

lynda—hey neighbor!

nobody—yeah, it wasn't fun. I practically had a heat stroke out there.

You caw too?

The thought of wakign up early is horrid. But when you're awake, and relaxing with a nice warm coffee in your hand and a full day ahead of you, it's not so bad.

egan—Would you expect anything else?

tim—Everything is easier when you have coffee.
