chilly willy

One thing I love about the changing of the season to brisk, chilly weather is the shift to hot homeade meals. Especially homeade soups and stews. Sunday I made a big batch of Chicken & Spaetzles and later this week I'll make a nice spicy batch of homemade Chili. Besides being uber-delicious, there is always plenty of leftovers for us to eat. Chili with cornbread one day, Chili Mac over whole wheat noodles the next. Yum! Do you have any particular foods you like to eat when the weather gets cold (or when "Fall" comes even if your area doesn't get cold)?

Geeeez, I'm really hungry now. I love the cooler weather, too. Now, "chilly willy" , is that like the "I was swimming excuse." LOL. :)

What's Spaetzles?

I just sent an email to my wife that I was going to try to leave early and I was thinking of something to throw in a crockpot for when she got home. Unfortunately, I won't be leaving early. Stupid work.

Spaetzles are like a little dumpling of sorts. They are of the German origin. I actually make mine from scratch, but you can probably buy them in the freezer section at your local grocers.

Not only do I have cold weather food I like, I have food I only will eat in the summer and only in the winter. People have told me I was odd for not wanting a salad in the winter.

My favorite thing to eat is Hutspot. It is a Dutch dish that is a mixture of potatos, carrots and onions. There is a kale version I can't stand though. It has a different name which sounds like Bura-cole.

Lynda—That sounds really good. Could you email me a recipe?

Does beer count as a food? It has all the goodness of liquid bread!

Once it cools off, I am all about pot pies...turkey or chicken. MMM. The Marie Callendar frozen ones are actually quite delectable! I also eat tomato soup with macaroni--a holdover from my younger days. I just had it two nights ago. SUCH a comfort food! :)

MMMM... Spaetzles. My little German gradmother used to make those. Now I have to go to the Haufbrau Haus in Vancouver, WA to get some just as good. Not too good for a German gal. I hope you have good luck with your Spaetzles and your spatulas!

I had chicken noodle soup for lunch at work today and tonight we are having friends over for Chili Mac and to watch the ball game. There is something comforting about it.

VoF—My Grandma gave me a spaetzle maker as a small gift at my wedding shower (along with my Kitchen-Aid mixer). That was almost 4 years ago and I make them several times a year. We always have them as Chicken & Spaetzles, but one of these days I'll make them with just some sour cream and butter.

Tmat—Sure why not.

Lisa—You don't cook do you?

Violet—Homemade?

VP—Yum! Me too.

Homemade chili, goat cheese lasagne, and black bean soup. Those are my favorites.

Fall is my favorite time of year and the food is my favorite part. I love sweet potato anything. At work, we have these delicious mashed sweet potatoes that I am sure has a million calories but it is so good.

I love chili and beef stew. Hmm? Oh and hot apple cider is yummy too.

Chicken and Spaetzles sounds delicious. Do you have the recipe?

Since beer is acceptable, I reccomend a full bodied beer like an extra stout. Definately better when the temperature dips. Octoberfest beers are tastey in the cool months as well.

My favorite comfort meal is chicken and dumplings. My mom used to make them from scratch.

I'll eat anything anytime of year. But I do switch to hot drinks like my mum's milky coffee (hot milk and coffee!)

dammit. I want chili now. Only mine'll be microwave 'cause i can't cook!

I hate chili. I don't know why. I used to blame it on the beans, but I like beans now. I just don't like chili.

Coan-bread! I love cornbread with a good chicken dish and a tall frosty ale.

I love green tea and honey to drink, and also a drink my mom used to make when I was a kid that she called clog (hot chocolate with a cinnamon stick and a starlight mint in it.)

Let me know what day you're serving the chili ;)

I love chilli, but chilli over noddles sounds fab. Over in England they eat it on rice, which I found very odd at first.

Can I just say that you tittle has a meaning in England that made me laugh out loud...
